The crude interwoolly fat extracted from the wool ash contains a variety of plant pigments and organic and inorganic impurities, and is usually brown in appearance.The crude lanolin extracted from wool washing liquid in a high speed centrifuge has a lighter color.The crude lanolin is brownish yellow, almost insoluble in water, hardly soluble in cold alcohols, and easily soluble in ether, benzene, chloroform, acetone and petroleum ether.Lanolin is composed of a variety of lanolin fatty acids and lanolin alcohols. Its composition is very complex and varies with the origin and season of the collected wool.Lanolin fatty acids contain only about 7 straight chain fatty acids, 2/3 branched fatty acids and 1/3 hydroxyl fatty acids.The carbon number is distributed in the range of C9-C34.The carbon content of lanolin alcohol is distributed in the range of C14-C33.
